Born in Pennsylvania, Tobias moved to New York City in 2008 to pursue a career in acting. The following year he joined Sam Mendes’ “Bridge Project”, performing plays in rep first at Brooklyn’s own BAM followed by an international tour. Upon returning to the States he settled in Brooklyn, his home now for over a decade. His painting career sprung from a desire to express what he could not through performance, a vision of the world free from the confines of scripted dialogue and full of vibrant color. Using photographs which are first manipulated in their exposure then reconstituted on a digital canvas, Tobias separates the reality of what is seen into an impression of light broken down into clearly defined regions of color. The pieces are further removed form their source by transcribing the digital image by hand onto a physical canvas, exploring the relationship between our vision of the world and it’s distortion through technology. Finally a coating of resin gives the painting a reflective and dreamlike quality, placing a reflection of the viewer themself onto the canvas as a reminder that we are, as an audience, as much a part of art as the elements that dictate its form.
